Multi-level Governance of GEG

RESEARCH FOCUS

WG2 focuses on some of the following questions across various issue areas in environmental and sustainable development policies (e.g. biodiversity, nature conservation, climate change, landscape management, regulation of chemicals…):

  • Evolution and transformation of multilevel environmental governance: structures, institutions, mechanisms; implications for coherence, coordination, and effectiveness
  • New modes of participation at different levels of decision-making and consequences on power asymmetries and legitimacy
  • Reception of norms and policies developed at the international level by national and sub-national actors; impact of international agreements and actors on the policy process at the national level (horizontal and/or vertical integration of actors/agencies in decision-making and implementation)
  • Engagement of transnational actors in governance at the national/sub-national levels and engagement of sub-national actors at the international level; dependence of goals and policy programs at the international level on ‘two-level game’ structure of international decision making
  • Governance across scales, politics of scale, rescaling of politics and governance
  • Political, economic and environmental crisis as agents of change in multilevel environmental governance processes
  • Multilevel economic governance (globalisation, trade, role of multinational companies) vs. multilevel environmental governance

WG2 is open to all members of the COST Action IS0802 Management Committee, and to members of their parent institutions, as well as interested researchers from other academic institutions within the Action IS0802 member countries – see the list on COST website.

PhD students, junior and senior researchers are all welcome.
